About the Program

These fantastic works combine exciting rhythms with some of the most beautiful melodies in the repertoire. The concert will open with the famous Danzon No. 2 by the Mexican composer Arturo Márquez. This piece is a fantastic light opener that will for sure set the mood and energy for the rest of the concert. From Mexico, our focus will move to Spain to perform Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquin Rodrigo, one of the most frequently performed instrumental concertos by a 20th-century composer. The gorgeous English horn melody of the second movement was later an inspiration to jazz composers and the movement itself became the unofficial national anthem of Spain. The program will close with Tchaikovsky's iconic Symphony No. 4, which also has a nickname - Fatum (fate). The nickname comes from the rhythmic figuration that ties the symphony together, reminding us of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony (another symphony described as fate knocking on the door).
