Nicolai Janitzky
Baritone Nicolai Janitzky is a native of Northern California. He recently appeared at the Coronado Performing Arts Center with the Rockford Symphony as a soloist in the Last Night of the Proms, Brahms Requiem, and Haydn’s Paukenmesse. Recent operatic engagements include the role of Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor with Musica Viva in Hong Kong, Germont in La Traviata with Festival Opera in California, and Tchelkalov in Boris Godunov with San Francisco Opera. As an apprentice artist with Sante Fe Opera, he went on to perform the title role in Eugene Onegin on short notice. Other roles he has sung include the title role in Don Giovanni, Marcello in La Boheme, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, Belcore in L’Elisir D’Amore, Valentin in Faust, Silvio in I Pagliacci, Count Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro, and Guglielmo in Cosi fan Tutte. He has also worked at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Diego Opera, Washington National Opera, New York City Opera, and Glimmerglass Opera. He is also an active recitalist, and has performed in such venues as Carnegie (Weill) Hall in New York City, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Cleveland Institute of Music Art Song Festival. He is the winner of several competitions including the George London Foundation, Sullivan Foundation, and Opera Index Foundation. He has also been a finalist in the Operalia (Placido Domingo) Vocal Competition. He studied at the Yale University Opera Program and the Music Academy of the West. He has studied with many distinguished artists including Marilyn Horne and Sherrill Milnes. He currently resides in the Rockford area with his family.
