About the Program

What is the “Hollywood Sound?” Where did it come from and how did it evolve? From Max Steiner’s Casablanca to Bernard Herrmann’s Psycho, Joe Hisaishi’s Studio Ghibli films to John Williams’s Star Wars––the sound of film is varied and complex. However, the great orchestral film composers from the Golden Age of Cinema to today have drawn inspiration from classical composers such as Sergei Rachmaninoff, Gustav Holst, Erich Korngold, Gustav Mahler and Maurice Ravel. This program places these two related traditions side-by-side for easy comparison, featuring film classics such as Psycho, The Godfather, Casablanca, Robin Hood and Howl’s Moving Castle alongside the romantic, powerful and songful Piano Concerto No. 2 by Sergei Rachmaninoff, performed by international superstar Wei Luo. Join us for a conversational look at the history and style of film music along with Romantic era composers in a program full of drama and lush melodies that will leave you singing all the way home.
